Bill Richardson, Former UN Ambassador and Governor of New Mexico, Dies at 75

 

Bill Richardson, renowned diplomat and former Governor of New Mexico, passed away peacefully at the age of 75 in his home in Chatham, Massachusetts. He is remembered for his tireless efforts in negotiating the release of unjustly detained Americans overseas. 

Throughout his illustrious career, Richardson served in multiple capacities, including as a US Congressman, US Ambassador to the UN, and US Secretary of Energy during President Bill Clinton's tenure. He served two terms as the Governor of New Mexico. His visionary leadership was acknowledged by current New Mexico Governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham, who took to social media to commend Richardson's foresight in recognizing the state's potential.

His dedication to human rights and international diplomacy led him to create the Richardson Center for Global Engagement in 2011. This initiative aimed to negotiate the release of individuals held overseas. The center claims to have assisted over 80 families in such endeavors. Neda Sharghi, who heads the Bring Our Families Home Campaign, lauded Richardson's commitment, stating that he had been a fervent supporter of human rights and in the mission to repatriate those unjustly detained overseas.

Throughout his life, Richardson received multiple Nobel Peace Prize nominations, including one in 2023. Mickey Bergman, Vice President of the Richardson Center, spoke of Richardson's commitment, saying, "Governor Richardson would converse with anyone if it meant securing freedom for those unjustly detained."

Bill's wife, Barbara, with whom he shared over 50 years of marriage, was beside him during his final moments.

Paying tribute to the late governor, President Biden highlighted Richardson's unique service to the nation, stating, "Few have served our country in so many roles with such determination, innovation, and positivity." He commended Richardson's relentless efforts to secure the release of Americans from perilous regions around the world. Biden fondly remembered Richardson, noting his passion for politics, deep-rooted love for America, and firm belief in unity across differences. "He was a true patriot and a distinctive individual. His legacy will live on."
